Lifting winches for overhead cranes with a capacity of up to 60 tonnes

Open barrel winches are essential devices for lifting and moving heavy loads in industrial settings. Designed and manufactured in-house for over 40 years, OMIS open barrel winches are available in a wide range of capacities and configurations, ensuring high-quality construction, optimal performance and long service life.

Open barrel winches, commonly installed on bridge cranes, are supplied pre-assembled on the trolley, complete with motor, brake and wheels, ready for quick installation. The lifting and travel movements of the trolley are managed by inverters to ensure maximum precision and control. The standard hook strokes are 10 and 20 m, but greater lengths are possible on request.
Two main versions are available, single-reeved, with a single rope winding (2/4/6 strands) and double-reeved, with double rope winding (4/8/12/16 strands), ideal for more precise load positioning. The drum can be positioned parallel to the crane girders (standard configuration) or at right angles to reduce the lateral footprint of the trolley. The load limiting device is connected to an electronic board that allows the management of two load thresholds, in accordance with European safety regulations.
There are many possible configurations: the winch can be installed above the girders for maximum hook stroke, between the girders to optimise the available height, or equipped with sliding end-carriages if the width of the trolley exceeds 2.5 m. Swivelling or rotating open barrel winches are also available, ideal for handling containers, pipes, profiles or bulky loads. For double lifting applications, you can opt for the double trolley configuration (X+X or X/X), which is particularly suitable in cases where the lifting capacities of the two hoists are identical. This solution allows for the simultaneous handling of bulky loads such as sheet metal packs, pipes, hulls, prefabs.
Open barrel winches are available both as single units and integrated into complete crane kits.

Double lifting

In the case of double lifting, the OMIS open barrel winch range offers two options to choose from. Double trolley lifting (X+X or X/X) is the most suitable where, in most cases, the capacities of the two lifting units are identical. Simultaneous operation of the two separate trolleys is thus possible for handling large loads such as sheet metal packs, pipes, hulls, prefabs.

Double beak hook

The double beak hook is generally used for lifting loads when it is necessary to stabilise underhook devices such as lifting beams and make the use of straps or chains more versatile.

Encoder in the lifting motor

In inverter-controlled motors, the encoder applied to the motor axis allows the inverter to have instant feedback on the actual motor speed and thus the actual lifting speed. It allows the motor to be used at very low RPM (very low lifting speed) for precise load handling control. The encoder also plays the role of a safety device as it transmits any discrepancies between supply frequency and motor speed to the inverter. A difference between the two means that there is some kind of malfunction and allows the inverter to stop supplying power to the motor.

Rain canopy

This is a canopy that provides shelter and protection from atmospheric precipitation such as rain and snow. Made of weatherproof materials, this canopy is essential for preserving integrity and operation in outdoor environments.

Heat canopy

This is a cover for the mechanisms made of insulating material that acts as a shield to protect the different parts of the lifting system from heat sources from above such as lamps or heating systems.

Condensation prevention heating elements

These are devices inside the winding that constantly keep the motor at a temperature that prevents the formation of condensation inside it in environments with high temperature and humidity variations and in outdoor environments. The condensation prevention heating elements are always supplied in combination with PTC thermal probes.

PTC thermal probes

They provide protection for motors used in hot environments or in particular climatic conditions where cooling of the motor by ventilation might not be sufficient. PTC temperature sensors are always supplied in combination with condensation prevention heating elements

Frequently Asked Questions

Why prefer the OMIS open barrel hoist over what the market offers?

OMIS has been manufacturing open barrel hoists for over 40 years and its current offer represents the very best in terms of variety, quality and cost-effectiveness. Reliability is guaranteed by in-house production of all the mechanical components and the entire process is monitored with care from the start to final assembly.

What is the difference between a hoist and an open barrel hoist? Which is better?

Both lift loads, but differ in design and use. The hoist is ideal for loads of up to 10,000 kg. The open barrel hoist is suitable for heavy duty even in harsh environments, sometimes exceeding the capacity of 150 tonnes. The choice between the two depends on the specific needs of the application and on the lifting requirements.

In which situations does a centred pull become crucial?

A centred pull becomes crucial in contexts that require stability and maximum safety of the load being handled. Using an open barrel hoist with a double propeller provides better centring on the ascending and descending axis of the hook, throughout its stroke.

Is it possible to install an additional open barrel hoist or hoist on the same crane in the future?

In certain situations, installation is possible, but is conditioned by the structural compatibility of the crane, the general stability of the shed and other important safety factors.

What are the differences between parallel, orthogonal and double-reeved drums?

The OMIS open barrel hoist can have a parallel drum if it is positioned parallel to the bridge girders, an orthogonal drum if it is positioned perpendicular to the bridge girders, or a double-reeved drum when it is equipped with two rope winding propellers.

Why should I periodically check the wire rope of my hoist/open barrel hoist?

Periodic inspection of the wire rope is crucial to ensure the safety of operators, prevent breakdowns and sudden falls, comply with regulations and maintain overall operational efficiency.
